When asked, during a completely fictitious interview, exactly when it was that he knew he would become a writer, Jack replied (laughing) “The moment my secondary school English teacher kicked me out and banned me from his classroom.”
Born and raised in South London, to hippie parents hung-over from the 60’s, Jack Charles spent much of his childhood backpacking Europe alongside them.
“I was brought up on a mixture of counterculture ideals and the council-estate-of-mind.”
Influenced by his environment to create music, poetry and stories, Jack developed a strong, socially critical, ‘working class’ voice, a theme common throughout his works. “If I can illuminate the mentality of the characters on the fringes of society, then, from there, we can gain a better perspective of the entire thing.”
Following spells living abroad, Spain and Germany, Jack returned home to finish the final pages of his debut novel, Barley Sugar – a violent dissection of love in all its forms and the sacrifices we’re willing to make for it.
Jack Charles currently resides in an American 5th wheel trailer on the banks of the river Thames, where he is busy at work on a collection of short fiction.
